She is best known for her work on the long-running sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live. Gaines began her career in television in the late 1970s, working as a production assistant on the show Saturday Night Live. She quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a producer in 1982. She remained with the show until 1995, when she left to pursue other projects. Gaines has since gone on to produce a number of other television shows, including The Rosie O'Donnell Show, The Chris Rock Show, and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. She has also produced a number of films, including The Wedding Singer and The 40-Year-Old Virgin. Gaines has won numerous awards for her work, including two Emmy Awards and a Peabody Award. She is currently retired and living in New York City.
