LL Cool J stands for Ladies Love Cool James.
The moniker was coined by his friend and fellow rapper Mikey D.
He had originally called himself J-Ski but, as he told the VHS1 documentary Planet Rock: The Story of Hip Hop and the Crack Generation, he did not want to be associated with cocaine culture – with a few rappers at the time using the names Ski or Blow, which were connected to the use of the narcotic.
